CHAPTER SEVEN
Joe lifted his head from the pillow as he opened one eye.
"Someone's singing?" he muttered into the pillow as he laid his head down and closed his eyes. His head pounded with every beat. He covered his head with the pillow. Then he heard the sound again. Someone was definitely singing.
He glanced at the clock, it was six-thirty in the morning, and he never got up before seven unless he was going fishing. And those plans had fallen by the wayside quickly when it began raining last night. He could tolerate the mud and undesirable conditions, but he doubted Kia could, especially since she wasn't an avid fisherman.
He jerked on his pants, raked a hand through his hair, and slipped out of his bedroom. He peeked into the short hallway, then into the living area.
He was right, someone was singing—and he smelled bacon cooking. Bacon? His mouth began to water, his stomach growled.
Rubbing his eyes, he strolled into the living room and eyed Kia standing at the stove, singing and turning the bacon with a fork. Her hair was pulled up high into a ponytail, and looked damp, as though she'd just gotten out of the shower moments ago. He envied the droplets of water that must have pelted her olive skin. His mouth watered.
Get a grip, man. It's too early in the morning to be lusting after a woman. Especially this woman!
"Good morning, you sound very chipper," he rasped, wondering where she got her energy. Obviously she hadn't had any trouble sleeping. She had no idea he had spent part of the night moving the bed, changing the sheets and finding containers to catch the rain.
Kia spotted him and quickly looked away. "Good morning. And yes, I am, as a matter of fact." She smiled but not at him.
Did all women rise so early in the morning and cook breakfast and sing? No, he rubbed his face once more. No, all women didn't. He knew that. So, what had her in such a good mood?
Most women would be upset that their wedding night had gone so strangely. Yet, Kia was singing. She was obviously happy about the fact that he hadn't touched her. Since she had been the willing partner last night, shouldn't she be the least upset that he hadn't taken the advantage she so freely offered? She was definitely a puzzle.
She was wearing a yellow jogging suit that looked soft and comfortable.
"Wash up, will you? Breakfast is nearly ready. How do you like your eggs?" She asked still not looking at him.
"Sunny side up, thanks. I'll just be a few minutes."
He hurried into the bedroom, washed as he was told and ran a comb through his hair. After brushing his teeth and throwing on a sweatshirt, he came back into the kitchen and joined her.
She didn't look directly at him, but kept on humming the same tune she'd been singing.
"You sing pretty," he said pouring a cup of coffee.
"Thanks. It's a habit I have. I sing a lot.
